There’s a lot of discussion right now about whether “PDA” is appropriate at Pride events, so here’s a reminder that the very first Pride event in 1970 (called the Christopher Street Liberation Day Parade) featured a “Gay-In” with same-sex couples showing public affection for each other:
Similar events were held at other Prides in the 70s and 80s. In this period, displays of same-sex affection were especially encouraged, and some even featured gay “kissing booths”:
This was not casual, it was an intentional choice meant to send a specific political message that LGBT people would no longer stay hidden. People who say that PDA grosses them out no matter who does it are missing the point entirely. Public displays of affection among LGBT people within the context of Pride are part of its historical political message and significance. Refusing to engage with and understand that context is inherently reactionary.
Meet the faces of the “I’m Sorry” campaign, a group of Christians who go to Chicago’s pride celebrations every year to apologize for their past hateful actions against LGBT people. The group started in 2010 and has since moved to other cities across the world. This is what love looks like. (via the Advocate)
I know it’s color but this needed to be shared
Amazing
A reminder that everyone can change, and that there are truly wonderful and supportive people out there.
Look it’s a little self-serving and feel-good for the Christians in question, I’m sure, but you have no idea how healing this can be for LGBT Christian folks. Even if they grew up in a welcoming tradition. Especially if they did not.
Having separate flags is good bcos it’s good to have a symbol for your particular identity to embrace but it also important to remember the rainbow flag unites us all. All LGBT+ people can use it. I feel like it’s somehow become assumed by a lot of younger lgbt+ people that it’s only fr gay men, which it isn’t and never has been
The rainbow flag when originally created by Gilbert Baker in 1978 actually contained 8 stripes that were assigned values and specific meanings that were meant to show what unites us and what we value as a community,
It took 30 people to hand dye AND hand stitch the first 2 pride flags- 30 people of various identities came together to create the first symbol of pride. Hot pink was removed due to fabric shortages and turquoise was mixed with indigo to have the darker blue we have today.
Having individual flags is great to show your identity but I think we shouldn’t forget that the rainbow flag isn’t reserved for gay men, it was created to show what we all have in common regardless of identity.
This further proves that Bugs Bunny is more powerful than God and is not a force to be reckoned with
“One day, about 14 days after the accident, one of Blanc’s neurologists walked into the room and tried something completely new. He went to Mel’s bed and asked, “Bugs Bunny, how are you doing today?”
There was a pause while people in the room just shook their heads. Then, in a weak voice, came the response anyone would recognize.
“Myeeeeh. What’s up doc?”
The doctor then asked Tweety if he was there too.
“I tot I taw a puddy tat,” was the reply. It took seven more months in a body cast for Blanc to recover. He even voiced Barney Rubble in the first episodes of The Flintstoneswhilelying in bed with a microphone dangling from above.
The Radio Lab piece includes excerpts from an episode of This is Your Life when Blanc’s doctor tried to explain how he revived his patient.
“It seemed like Bugs Bunny was trying to save his life,” was all he could say.
Radio Lab features another neurologist’s opinion: Blanc was such a hard-working professional that his characters lived, protected from the brain injury, deep in his unconscious mind. The doctor’s question must have sounded like a director’s cue. Essentially, “Mr. Blanc, you’re on.””
@oneofthemtheaternerds i am so sorry i failed to adequately represent you in this post. it is important to me to represent all straight people equally, so i have added another box -inspired by what you have said- to fully account for straight culture in all its depth. apologies again for the oversight.
This year, on the 31 March, we lost Gilbert Baker, gay artist and creator of the gay pride flag. Today we would celebrate his 66th birthday. Let’s remember him as the wonderful person he was.
Imagine Jurassic World but Chris Pratt’s character is a woman. The whole film is exactly the same, but instead of Owen we have Olivia. It makes more sense that Olivia is the alpha of Raptor Squad, because all the raptors are female as well. Olivia and Claire argue about shoes (”They’re actually pretty comfortable for heels.” “I have a spare pair of boots in the truck for the LOVE OF GOD please borrow them.” “I’m fine! I can walk miles in these!” “You’re weird.”) They save each other’s lives. They make out. They walk into the sunset together. Gal pals who defeated the dinosaurs. The End.
God creates dinosaurs. God destroys dinosaurs. God creates man. Man destroys God. Man creates dinosaurs. Dinosaurs eat man. Woman inherits the earth.
